In my XJ-S, I more or less had 2nd gear while in Drive, accelerating from 1st to 3rd but if I tried to kick down to 2nd from 3rd or shift down from D to 2, the engine would rev like I'd downshifted but the rear wheels never seemed to get the memo (or the power). It turned out to be a little plastic or bakelite cylinder that had crumbled after years of broiling away in the belly of the transmission.
